August 31, 2009 A man charged with shooting and wounding a Virginia Union University student early yesterday morning is City Councilman E. Marty Jewell's nephew. Jewell, a VUU graduate, said this afternoon that he is stunned by developments in the case but declined to comment beyond saying that Jimar Jewell, 21, is his sister's son. VUU Police Chief David Horace said today that Jimar Jewell is believed to be the shooter in an incident shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday in front of a VUU dormitory in which a student was shot three times in the left leg after a large crowd of people gathered and an argument broke out. Campus police officers were among the crowd when the shooting occurred, he said. Jimar Jewell made an initial appearance in Richmond General District Court this morning. He is charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm. Two other suspects in the case are still unaccounted for. Police recovered the weapon. Chief Horace
said that he
talked to the
victim shortly
after surgery at
VCU Medical
Center early
yesterday
morning and that
the student said
he was not
familiar with
his attackers.
The student, who
is not being
identified by
the university,
is expected to
be released
within the next
day, Chief
Horace said. |
